Social Responsibility

We are committed to enhancing the living standard of all our people especially in the rural communities

Community Development

Westfalia is proud to be associated with the Albert Heijn Foundation, the Waitrose Foundation and the Fairtrade Organisation all of which contribute a portion of turnover from Westfalia’s products to our community projects.

Westfalia Wellness Centre

We provide primary and preventative healthcare to employees and their families. Between 350 and 500 patients are seen on a monthly base.

The Wellness Centre employs a full-time nursing sister and two nursing assistants. They are trained in first aid, HIV/AIDS testing and counselling. Other services include:

  • The provision of first aid kits to all farms and sites;
  • Peer group educators;
  • Weekly doctor visits;
  • Low cost medication;
  • Voluntary Counselling and Testing for HIV/AIDS;
  • Tuberculosis awareness campaigns.

Westfalia Resource Centre

We built the centre to bridge an education gap for local, disadvantaged schools and communities. It also benefits Westfalia’s own staff members.

The Centre is strategically built next to the Tzaneen Combined School (on the Westfalia farm), to allow learners library and internet access for completion of their class assignments. We provide a tutor who is available for help and advice. An interactive screen also makes it possible for learners to sit in on maths and science classes by specialised teachers based at other schools. The Centre is utilised as a quiet examination facility for Grade 12 learners.

Creches

Registered with the relevant governmental departments pre-school crèches are available to Westfalia staff at Westfalia farms (Tzaneen), Bavaria farms (Hoedspruit) and Everdon farms (Howick). They provide safe and reliable daycare for children aged between three months and five years, who receive two nourishing meals per day, with additional fruit and sandwiches served in the afternoon. This ensures all-day energy to help follow the curriculum.

Lebone Arts and Crafts Centre

The Arts and Crafts Centre was established in 2006 to introduce unemployed women to sustainable entrepreneurship. Lebone means light in Sepedi. The women’s traditional craftsmanship is honed and marketed by Project Coordinator Ilze Botha. Their products vary between the traditional and modern, and are for sale to local and international markets.
